Why fronds are their own job
A frond is mostly air by volume and surprisingly heavy by weight. Twenty of
them fill a truck bed. They also do not compress, so a pile that looks modest
takes more hauling capacity than the same volume of branches.
The spines are the other reason people call rather than do it themselves.
Washingtonia petioles carry rows of hooked thorns that go through gardening
gloves.
Clear them sooner rather than later
Phoenix heat dries fronds fast, and dry fronds are more brittle, more spiky
and more work to handle. They are also a fire consideration once they are
crisp. The job is easier and cheaper in the first week.
A leaning palm is a warning, not a look
This is the part worth acting on. A palm that has shifted in saturated ground
has almost always torn roots on one side. It does not straighten up, and the
next strong wind takes it over — usually in the direction it is already
leaning.
If yours has moved, photograph it from two sides and send it before the next
storm rather than after. Dealing with a leaning palm on a calm day costs a
fraction of dealing with a fallen one across a wall.
